About Red Deer

The City of Red Deer is located in central Alberta, Canada. The first settlers in the area were a small group of First Nations people. In 1873, the area was explored by railway surveyors who came from Winnipeg. They returned to Fort Edmonton and reported on their findings and recommended building a fort near the Blackfoot Crossing of the Red Deer River for protection against attacks by some hostile members of the Cree Nation. A year later, construction of the fort was started by the North-West Mounted Police and they gave it the name Fort August. It was located in what is now downtown Red Deer.

The economy of Red Deer, Alberta came from a variety of industries that provided employment for residents. Among them were, ranching, farming, oil and natural gas production as well as service-producing industries such as canning and milling companies. The discovery of oil in the Turner Valley in 1914 brought some wealth to Red Deer. In the 1920s, Red Deer was the third largest city in Alberta, after Calgary and Edmonton.

The North-West Mounted Police continued to operate the fort until they were replaced by members of the Canadian Army in 1876. It was renamed Fort Calgary and it was responsible for patrolling the whole area between Fort Macleod and Fort Edmonton. With increasing settlement of the area, changes were needed to make the fort an effective centre of government. In 1880, responsibility for its operation was transferred from London to Ottawa where it became part of the Department of Militia and Defence.
