Cochiti Lake is located in Sandoval County New Mexico, and is one of the area's hidden treasures. Enjoy spectacular scenes of the mountain ranges and water, especially at dawn and dusk when the sky really puts on a light show. In a predominantly desert environment, most of the vegetation around the park are desert plants, but that doesn't prevent the fauna from thriving. Look forward to seeing osprey nesting sites, rabbits and deer, as well as other desert animals around the lake. Windsurfing is a common past time at the lake, as well as swimming and fishing for bass, crappie, walleye, catfish, sunfish and trout. Cochiti Lake is five miles from Tent Rocks National Monument, which has fascinating geological formations, so be sure to stop by. At an elevation of over 7,000 feet, the Ponderosa Horse Campground is the perfect place for a nice, cool getaway into the mountains of New Mexico. The site is located between Lake Alice and Lake Maloya in Sugarite Canyon, and is just 6 miles from the Bandelier National Monument, meaning there's tons to do and see, and lots of natural terrain to explore. The town of Los Alamos is also close by for your shopping needs, and there are museums, theaters and even an ice rink near the campground. The Ponderosa Campground is located just 6 miles from the Bandelier National Monument and the town of Los Alamos. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Canyon, where you will find acres of rugged mesa country with petroglyphs, carving in the soft stone walls and the standing masonry walls that play tribute to the areas rich cultural past and present. Look out for wildlife such as black bears, mule deer, mountain lions and squirrels as well as birds like canyon towhees and Stellar's jays. One hiking trail extends from the campsite, however, there are other trails just outside the site and excellent rock climbing opportunities at the Bandelier Monument. Campers also venture into town to pick up supplies at the various stores, go ice skating or even visit one of the museums.
