Get on the lake surface to enjoy a peaceful and easy-going float on the lake, and be sure to cast a few lines to catch record-sized trout and kokanee salmon. Ice fishing is very popular during the winter, as is cross-country skiing. During the warmer months, be sure to hike, bike and picnic your way around the lake, taking in the beautiful natural terrain as you go.

3 miles west from Ghost Ranch Education & Retreat Center is the Echo Amphitheater, a favorite among serial visitors to Abiquiu, New Mexico. The last part of the trail has steep stairs leading up to the Echo Canyon, where the rocks are a natural habitat for snakes, so be sure to stay on the trail and off the rocks! Located on the west bank of the Rio Grande river is the Senator Willie M Chavez State Park, just a few miles from downtown Belen. Visitors can enjoy the views from acres of farmland, hiking through the bosque and fishing in the irrigation ditches. Very quiet and close to the city, its amenities and small town attractions, the Senator Willie M Chavez State Park is a great place to stay if you're passing through Belen.
