Adjacent to the Malpais Lava Flow is the Valley of Fires recreation Area. Travelers love this park because from a distance, the hardened lava flows appear barren, but a hike around the formation will reveal a variety of flowers, cacti, bushes and trees common in the Chihuahuan desert. The area is also known to be buzzing with wildlife. Look forward to barberry sheep, bats, mule deer, road runner, great horned owls and a plethora of other bird species uncommon in other parts of the state. The South Highlands Campground is located in the Elephante Butte Lake State Park and is in a secluded area perfect for an escape into the serene southwestern landscape. Explore the gorgeous desert vistas that are mixed in with hills and lakes, for a great outdoor adventure. Make your way down to the lake for water skiing, paddle boarding, fishing and of course swimming, and strap on your hiking boots to hit the trails on foot or bike. Jemez Falls - USFS is located near the beautiful New Mexico city of Santa Fe, and is a great camping spot for the history-buff and the desert lover. At an elevation of over 7,000 feet, the Lobo Canyon Campground is perfectly situated for excellent picnic-friendly weather. Enjoy time spent with family and friends, surrounded by lush ponderosa, juniper and pinion and plenty of shade. Enjoy hiking the interpretive trails and biking among the hills, but be careful not to intrude on sacred Indian territory that will be marked off.

There's tons of excellent outdoor activities to enjoy, so get ready for great fishing, birding, wildlife viewing, wildflower viewing or mountain biking. Visitors especially love to hike the various trails, so get ready to explore the gorgeous forestry that climbs up the bluffs and runs through the canyon. There's also equestrian trails as well as a number of picnic tables, so whether you want to go galloping through the wilderness or hang out with friends over great food, there's plenty of space and picnic tables to make that happen!

Located 25 miles from Grants, New Mexico is the Bluewater Lake State Park. Set in a thriving pinion-juniper landscape with breath taking views toward the Zuni Mountains. Datil Well Campground is located at one of the 15 wells that are along the old Magdalena Livestock Driveway. The area includes 3 miles of hiking trails in piñon-juniper and ponderosa pine woodlands, with scenic views of the San Augustin Plains. The trail and vistas also offer an occasional glimpse of wildlife in a quiet setting. Enjoy picnicking along the small spots of leveled land, and be sure to look up at twilight to see the stars come out in full brightness.
