About Old Quebec City
Old Quebec City is a historic district of Quebec City that was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, and is just one of five walled cities in Canada. It's about 2 kilometers from the St. Lawrence River, and forms the heart of Quebec City's commercial quarter.
The district was established in the 17th century, after a fort was erected due to a fur trading center, and settlement began in 1608. Along with Quebec City's old port, it is located between the Saint-Charles River and Chaussegros Street. Around 30 structures are protected by law that are over 180 years old.
Even though the area has been urbanized for about two centuries, it is still possible to see how the city looked in 1692 with its walls and gates. It's home to many heritage buildings such as churches and government buildings.
