Stettler is a small, humble town in Central Alberta, Canada. It is located near the junction of Highway 45 and Highway 40 and is 114 km north-east of Red Deer. The town's population at the 2016 census was 3,679 making it Albert's second-smallest city by population after Wetaskiwin.

Stettler is located in a farming area and the economy is based around agriculture, tourism, transportation, agriculture and forestry. Tourism is an important part of the economy with facilities like the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology being visited by over 200 000 people per year.

Park Facilities:

 

There are many facilities available throughout the park such as showers, restrooms, and many essentials like firewood and ice. The main camping area is called the "Cottage Camping Area" and is located just off Highway 13 on Stirling Drive. This area has approximately 374 campsites that include some sites that have power hook-ups for RVs of up to 40 feet in length.

 

The other main camping area is called the "Group Camping Area", this is located one kilometre west of the Cottage Camping Area. It has a total of twelve campsites, which include some sites with full hook-ups for RVs of up to 40 feet in length. There are many facilities available in this area like a playground, horseshoe pits, tables, restrooms and fire pits.

 

RV Wash:

 

In addition to all of these facilities there is also an RV wash. This wash consists of two separate stalls. One stall is divided into two washing areas, one for front and one for rear ends. The other stall, which is thirty feet long, has two automatic brushes and a detergent dispenser to allow each side to be washed separately.

 

RV Toilets:

 

Along with the wash facilities there are also four toilets all located within ten feet of a sewer connection. They are equipped with flushing doors, one toilet is located in the rear of the park to allow for overflow access.

 

Off-Leash Dog Area:

 

There is also a dog off leash area located one kilometre west of the Cottage Camping Area. This area has six separate smaller crossovers that are approximately twenty feet wide and thirty feet long, depending on where they are placed along the off leash trail.

Stettler is one of the more unique communities in Alberta, and home to many diverse people. With over 15 galleries, a gallery-in-a-library, and museum showcasing the community's history in a variety of ways, there is always something to be around for art and culture on any given day. Although often overshadowed by other communities with larger museums or museums far from town, Stettler provides much more than what it appears to offer.

 

The Stettler Museum of History is housed in a historic building that was once the only public library in the town. It houses over 3,000 artifacts from a variety of historical sources, including a large collection of archeological findings, which were collected over several years by local archeologist Steven MacDonald.

Stettler is a town in Alberta, Canada with a population of 8,350 people. It is located centrally in the province and right on Highway 3.

The town has approximately two dozen businesses, both grocery and hardware stores. Some of the larger retailers in the region include Wal-Mart, Superstore, Canadian Tire, and a new Shoppers Drug Mart.

The town itself has very few big box stores. The public transit system is nearly non-existent, with an hourly bus that connects Stettler and the small community of Penhold to Red Deer, which is roughly away.

 

The town benefits from the presence of a college and a university, and boasts the historic Maple Leaf Pub and Restaurant. There are also several sporting facilities in the town including a track for running, playing soccer on or kicking a ball around.

 

Transportation in Stettler

 

The town of Stettler is well served by a provincial highway, one regional highway and two municipal highways.

 

-Alberta provincial highway 22 runs east to west through the town and is part of the Trans Canada Highway. The portion in Stettler is called Township Road 5005. 

-Highway 19 enters south at the junction with Highway 22, on the east side of town and exits northward at its junction with Highway 913 (formerly Highway 12). It is commonly known as the Red Deer Road. 

-Highway 913 (formerly Highway 12) is part of the original Red Deer Trail, a major transportation route between Calgary and Edmonton, before the development of Highway 2. It enters Stettler from the west and exits north at its junction with Highway 19. The portion in Stettler is called Township Road 5010. 

 

Natural Attractions in Stettler

 

Stettler is a town of about 4000 people, with some 25 km down the road to Red Deer. Maybe you live in Stettler, or maybe you’re thinking of visiting this region. In either case, there might be a few spots you haven’t been to yet!

 

The following are some picturesque locations that may be worth checking out: 

 

-The Pine Creek Canyon is the best all-around hiking destination around town. Right from the SW, it’s 416 meters deep, and with good accessibility, you can take your time to explore. The canyon is also marked with fire trails and scenic overlooks that run along the base of the cliffs, providing you with beautiful views.

 

-If you’re a lover of waterfalls, you should definitely check out the falls on Pine Creek. There are three different falls in all - Pine Creek Falls , Big Bear Falls, and Little Bear Falls. Depending on the season, you’ll see a different waterfall, and all three can be accessed by hiking.

 

-The Oasis Trail is a great place to go if you want to be alone in nature. The trail is great for hikers of all levels (especially those novice hikers who are just starting out), and it provides you with some stunning views. The trail is well marked, and located along the length of Pine Creek Canyon.

 

-Hike down to Pothole Lake. It’s located in a dip that protrudes from the canyon walls, so you may have to cross some cliffs when you get down there. There are some beautiful views here, and you might even see some mountain lions or coyotes. Just make sure that you’re not in the middle of their hunting grounds, because they’ve been known to be territorial!

 

-Drive down Pine Creek Canyon. It’s a beautiful, winding road that travels along the base of the canyon walls. It’s quite a popular area in the summertime, so it would be best to come early.

 

-The Red Deer Regional Park is a picturesque place off of Highway 11, just out of town. You can enjoy some of the most amazing scenery here as you hike along one of the park trails.
