Rocky Mountain House is a town in the Canadian province of Alberta. It is located on the Bow River, in the Rocky Mountain system. Across the river from Rocky Mountain House is Spruce Meadows Racetrack. The town lies at an elevation of 1,651 metres (5,413 ft) and has a population of 2,910 people according to its 2016 municipal census.
Rocky Mountain House is located approximately 300 kilometers (190 mi) southwest of Calgary. The town is at the junction of Highways 8 and 66, and lies 401 kilometers (250 mi) from Edmonton and 859 kilometers (560 mi) from Banff. Rocky Mountain House was founded in 1895.
The name of the town comes from a nearby mountain, which itself was named after the original Rocky Mountain House, an important stopping point along the North-West Mounted Police Trail. This original house was located north east of present-day Calgary, and it served as an important early outpost of commerce in Western Canada.
