About Peace River

Peace River is a town in the Peace Country of northwestern Alberta, Canada. It was founded by the Canadian Pacific Railway around 1908 and is known as "the breadbasket of Western Canada" for its fertile ranch lands and central location within a large area mostly used for farming.

The railroad arrived in 1906 and a station was built in Peace River that year. A community quickly developed, first called Ranche Grande but eventually named after the nearby river. By 1910, population growth had resulted in an office building, general store, and post office being constructed as well as many houses surrounding them.
