About Milk River

The best way to get an accurate depiction of the Milk River is by reading its history of it, from its origins in different ice age lakes in northern Alberta to its confluence with the Bow River where it becomes a tributary. The journey starts at the west end and crosses Calgary’s downtown. It continues up through Lesser Slave Lake into Fort McMurray before joining with the Athabasca River and flowing east through Athabasca and Athabasca Passes, past Jasper National Park to merge with the Columbia River in British Columbia.

The Milk River in its eastward stages has been the lifeblood of a variety of cultures. Acting almost like a trade route, it consistently flowed west toward the Rocky Mountains, where it was used to irrigate New Athabasca Lake and Lesser Slave Lake – which it subsequently drained. Its westward-flowing waters glistened in the harsh northern Alberta prairie sun and were used as an important link in the culture and economy of Indigenous people such as Cree, Blackfoot, Blackfoot Confederacy Nations and Dene.

It was these groups that travelled along its banks to hunt buffalo, fish and trap for resources such as beaver pelts.

The only thing that Milk River does not have is an apple pie shop; though I think it would be welcomed and added to the town's flavour.
