History in Hinton, Alberta

Hinton was settled by Europeans in the late 1800s, mainly cowboys from ranching families from Alberta and Alberta (leftover from when British North America was divided up into North Ontario/Quebec and what is now Western Canada). The town was originally owned by the Canadian Pacific Railroad, which built a rail yard there in 1919. Hinton's name is derived from a Shakespearean play where a character refers to the cattle feeder as "Hentown". While it is unclear where or when Hinton was named, newspaper articles and a historical marker indicate that it was formally renamed as of 1946.
