The Town of Bonnyville is a small northern Alberta town located on Highway 28, just southwest of Edmonton. This community's population now exceeds 12,000 people and has grown rapidly to accommodate those working in the oil sands development and expansion. The area was traditionally inhabited by aboriginal groups such as Cree and Chipewyan and the name Bonnyville is an English alteration of the original French name "Bonneville".
The economy of Bonnyville is founded primarily on agriculture, oil and gas production. There is also a growing concern about providing a tourism infrastructure in the area as well. The northern part of the town is located on a spit of land that juts out into Lake Athabasca and this has been developed into camping and RV sites by the Bonnyville Town Council. The use of watercraft was once vital to reach these areas but because of improved roads, many people are now able to drive to the campground.
Adventure and Events
The town of Bonnyville is known as the 'Gateway to the North' because it lies at the northwest entrance to Wood Buffalo National Park and is close to two other major national parks - Riding Mountain National Park and Elk Island National Park. There are many outdoor recreational opportunities in the area. Hiking trails abound in the parks and along adjacent waterways. Sportfishing, boating, swimming, canoeing, and kayaking are popular activities on Lake Athabasca.
The Bonnyville area is a mecca for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts as it contains many national and provincial parks, including Grasslands National Park. The park is divided into three geographic areas: the Pembina River valley, the valley of the Red Deer River, and the Badlands. In October there is an annual 2-day Bird Festival held at the Bonnyville Centennial Riel Cultural Center.
Camping
The Town of Bonnyville has established several campgrounds on the northern shore of the lake. The sites have paved pull-through pads and there are sanitary waste stations and potable water readily available. Most sites offer at least partial views of Lake Athabasca. Some also have electricity for RVs, as well as other amenities such as barbecue pits and picnic tables.
The Grouard Regional Park is located approximately 5 km south of Bonnyville on Highway 28. This campground offers services such as picnic areas, barbecues, a playground, and sanitary restrooms. There is also a nice sandy beach area on the lake with access to watercraft and other water sports. However, sites do not have any hookups, so consider bringing along an RV or towable camper with amenities on board if you're going to stay here.
Food
Bonnyville is also a popular destination for foodies as there are many restaurants to choose from. These small-town establishments also serve excellent local fare such as bannock and trout cooked on the grill. Some excellent choices of cuisines include:
- La Table Fine Dining
- The Canadian Brewing Company
- Woody's Diner
- Spencer Restaurant & Bar
The most popular activity for those visiting Bonnyville is the Lake Athabasca Cruising and Camping Club.
Events
An annual event held in Bonnyville over the spring and summer. It showcases a variety of local arts and crafts, along with children's activities, art exhibits, and exhibits by area artists. The festival also features live music performances by a variety of bands throughout the weekend.
Bonnyville is located very close to the city of Edmonton, which is the largest city in Alberta. There are many shops, restaurants, and attractions for those who want to spend a day out of the wilderness and into the city attractions.
Lake Bonnyville is not just a camping destination for those looking to explore Alberta's natural beauty, but there are also many interesting cultural opportunities available as well.
Bonnyville can be the perfect destination for campers who want to enjoy nature without having to rough it in a tent or RV.
