Escape to nature

Bashaw is a beautiful area with lots of outdoor activities, including fishing, golfing, biking and swimming. There are trails for hiking and skiing in the winter. And throughout summer, you can enjoy hiking and paddle around Cat Lake at the Cat Lake Provincial Park. It's also a great way to experience the flora and fauna of the area.

Ease of access

The city is fairly accessible by car. It takes about an hour to reach the scenic Cat Lake Road. The southernmost point is at Lethbridge, Alberta, but you'll need to cross into Saskatchewan first.

On the roads

Road conditions are generally good, but you should be prepared to deal with snow in the winter. It's not uncommon to see some slick driving conditions, especially when it snows during the fall and spring months. In Bashaw, drivers will often encounter herds of cattle on the highway. Culture

The first permanent native settlement was established at Bashaw in 1887. The area was first named Bashaw in 1900, after the British industrialist W.H.Bashaw who built a sawmill there. The town had a potash mine from 1906 to 1918, but it closed in 1919 when the price of potash fell and the plant was dismantled.
