About Banff

Banff is a popular resort town in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, located next to the Trans-Canada Highway. With an elevation of about 1200 meters, Banff is nestled in a valley with steep, heavily forested mountains on all sides. The population of Banff is about 2,800-3,200 permanent residents who live in some 350 dwellings, including large heritage or second homes.

Campground and Parks

The surrounding national park offers improved chances of deeper snow cover for skiing and other winter recreational pursuits. Banff has a very active tourist season, with thousands of visitors every day. The town is known for its hiking and rock climbing opportunities, the Cave and Basin hot springs, and the extensive network of trails leading to surrounding lakes, glaciers, and mountain peaks. Other popular activities include golfing, shopping, winter sports, and wildlife viewing.

Festivals and Events

Banff regularly hosts many festivals around its major attractions. The spectacular Sun Dance Pow-Wow, as well as the Banff Winter Carnival, are must-see events in Banff. Summer provides an array of family festivals, and evening activities include live music and dancing at the town’s many pubs, inns, and restaurants.

Food
Banff is a mecca for cooks in search of fresh, local ingredients and new techniques. The town has several great dining spots and a full year-round farmers market. There are also many great bistros, casual cafés, and fine restaurants in the larger communities surrounding Banff.

Transportation

This city is well-connected to other Alberta towns and Calgary. Nearby communities offer greater access to the rest of Canada by rail, highway, or air. The town's airport offers connections to the cities of Calgary and Edmonton (about a 2 1/2-hour drive from Banff), as well as Vancouver, British Columbia (1 1/4 hours).

Landmarks

The cave is located on a small lake in the North Banff park and is open from May to September. It is surrounded by magnificent cliffs and has spectacular views of the lake and mountains. Considered one of the best-visited attractions in Banff, there are numerous tour buses arriving daily - though not necessarily with you!

 

The lower Lake Louise is often called "the jewel" of Banff National Park as it is much less crowded than the Upper or Upper right-hand side. It is also much more secluded and tranquil.

Outdoor Attractions

The Banff National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that draws thousands of visitors to it annually. It is Canada’s oldest national park and the first of its kind in North America. It is located in the mountains just outside of the town and boasts hundreds of kilometers of trails that traverse its many lakes, waterfalls, forests, valleys, and glaciers. The Banff National Park is home to the majestic Sulphur Mountain and Mount Rundle, one of three mountains that make up the backside of the Rockies.

Attractions

Mackenzie King Alpine & Nordic Centre - 8 km N.E. of Banff Village (1 hour 30 minutes on foot) or 1 hour 20 minutes by golf cart or 15-minute drive. The center is located in an abandoned railway station and offers a cafeteria, sauna, indoor pool, and gymnasium among its facilities for visitors.

 

Banff Spa - There are many spas and hot springs in Banff, the most famous being at the Banff Springs Hotel. The spa at the hotel has indoor pools, hot tubs, a steam room, and outdoor pools. The outdoor pools are heated year-round and have cascading waterfalls.

 

Sun Dance Pow Wow - is every summer in July - it draws around 20,000+ people from all over Canada to witness this unique ceremony of First Nations culture found only in North America.
