About Athabasca

If you're looking for an outdoorsy adventure that is close to home, then Athabasca has plenty of campsites just waiting to be discovered. With lush forest and wide-open spaces, these campgrounds will fill your need for peace and solitude while still close enough to civilization when it comes around time to go home.

Athabasca is a small town about an hour northwest of Edmonton, Alberta. If you're planning to camp in Athabasca, it's always best to check the weather first. Athabasca stays hot and dry during summer but can receive rain at any time of the year. The temperatures in Athabasca will get cooler in the winter so make sure you pack your favorite warm clothes.

Camping

One of the best camping spots in Athabasca is Fallingwater Campground. Located right on the Athabasca River, which is a popular spot for kayaking, this campground has all the amenities you need, plus some extras. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and fire pit. The park also offers two washrooms with flush toilets and sinks, as well as several tent-only shelters in case you don't have a tent or prefer more privacy. There are no electrical outlets and not much shade so it is best to keep your car close by if you plan on staying for a few days.

Outdoor Attraction

There is plenty of wildlife to see in the Athabasca wilderness. Elk, bison, and moose are the most commonly seen animals but there are deer and beavers to be spotted as well. Watching these animals in their natural environment is a fun experience that you don't get with a visit to a zoo but it's also not a reason to camp outside of the park. There are too many risks, like bear attacks and getting lost in thick brush.

Events

This city hosts several events throughout the year that you may be interested in. These events range from spring bison hunts to wildflower festivals. All of these events are family-friendly and beginner-friendly so you should feel free to bring the kids out for fun and nature walks.

Food

Dining in Athabasca is as diverse as the city itself. The best thing about this place to eat is that most restaurants are family-oriented and have a variety of menus to cater to all tastes. The food and service are mostly in the form of fast food, but it's very cheap so it's nice for those on a budget. Some restaurants offer fine dining and service too, just not as many.

Travel

If you're looking for scenic drives, then Athabasca is the perfect place. It's close enough to Edmonton and Calgary that you have excellent transportation options when you need to return home at night or go out of town on vacation but far enough away to not be bothered by the hustle and bustle of city life.

It's ideal for a city getaway with all the amenities you need and even some you don't. Camp out in the woods and be free from the worries of city life in Athabasca.
