Adjacent to the Malpais Lava Flow is the Valley of Fires recreation Area. Travelers love this park because from a distance, the hardened lava flows appear barren, but a hike around the formation will reveal a variety of flowers, cacti, bushes and trees common in the Chihuahuan desert. The area is also known to be buzzing with wildlife. Look forward to barberry sheep, bats, mule deer, road runner, great horned owls and a plethora of other bird species uncommon in other parts of the state. Enjoy the fully accessibly Malpais Nature Trail, horseback riding and picnicking.
