Ponil Campground is located in northern New Mexico at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. We feature full 30/50 amp electric hookup sites along with tent sites for those seeking something a little more different. Visitors have access to bath houses and laundry facilities.

Given our convenient location, we are only a few hours drive to iconic New Mexico spots like Taos, Santa Fe, Angel Fire, Eagles Nest and Red River. Take day trips from the campground to visit casinos, do some shopping and enjoy local fine dining, while also taking in the exquisite desert vistas on your drive. In the area surrounding the campsite, you can enjoy art galleries, local foods and a grocery store for your convenience. Hunting, fishing, back packing, 4 wheeling, horse back riding and golfing are some of the things you can do in this part of New Mexico! Whether its for a day or two, we hope to see you soon!

We spent 4 nights here while on our ‘Santa Fe Trail’ road trip. Casey was helpful and very accommodating when we arrived and set up. The park was quiet and peaceful, we were very comfortable. We will certainly return if our travels bring us back in this direction.

Functional, only here for the location. Visiting a nearby Cimarron attraction and stayed one night. The other Cimarron campground was closed and this was the only choice for 30 miles around with electric. The non-long term sites are literally on-top of each other. If two RVs had slides out they would be touching. The utilities all worked, but the sites are not level and in fact ours was quite rutted gravel. We were so close to the highway that the truck traffic kept waking us up. The shower and laundry building looked run down from the outside so we did not check it out. The long term residents said they are serviceable but nothing special. Apparently the park has new owners as of couple years ago and they are said to be responsive to issues by the long term residents. Not a professionally run park and I would recommend it only in a pinch. We did see several forest service campgrounds west of town on the way out that looked more spread out that we would choose next time.

I requested a site with shade near the restroom if possible. Our site was perfect for that! Even better that it was a pull through. This Park has lots of big shade trees. It was conveniently right outside of Cimmaron which we wanted to explore. The down side was the child size toilets in the too small stalls. I don't understand how they can rate that restroom as "handicap accessible" except for the low sink countertop. My husband relates that the only soap dispenser on the men's side was empty or not working during our entire 4 day visit. There was hot water and good pressure for a shower. It was a quiet campground that seemed to have a lot of either residential or long term campers. There was no road noise.

Like parking in a storage. So tight we had to ask our neighbor to bring on his awning so we wouldn't hit it. Also lots of mosquitos and the need to mow the grass (weeds). Worst camp we've been to.

Beautiful area, clean restrooms and we were glad we could make a campfire in the evening. I grew up in Cimarron it was nice to see a few class mates and my dad. We have been staying at this campground once a year for several years now.

Got to the RV Park a little later in the afternoon than we had planned. So, we were fighting the clock as we had an appointment and were running short on time. The spot we were supposed to use had a motor home in it and he used the facilities for "our" spot and the next one which was vacant. No wrangler around and no note on her door saying when she would be back or a phone number. We went ahead and set up next to where we were supposed to be although it was barely big enough for our three slides. Changed clothes and was ready to leave when she showed. Very nice, pleasant lady. She said she would make him move but we were already set up. All we were going to do was sleep there 2 nights so it was OK this time. I would definitely stay there again , but would remind her that its her job to keep my spot that I paid for in advance for me.

I have a small camper so I was put between to huge cottonwood trees. I wanted to put out my awning so had to pull so far ahead that my elect cord just reached. The water hook-up was so close to ground that it was difficult. However it is the only RV park for miles around.

We reserved tent campsite for 5 nights to visit our daughter working at Philmont scout ranch for the summer and celebrate 4th of July weekend. Beautiful wooded campsite with water close to our site, clean restrooms and hot water for shower after long day of hike. During a hike on the second day at the nearby Cimarron state park my wife broke her ankle so we had to head back to Texas for surgery. The campsite owners installed a canopy in front of our tent to protect from evening sun, gave a nice cushioned stool to keep her leg elevated and refunded unused days of camping (policy is no refund). They went way beyond their way to make us as comfortable as possible. These days when most owners are interested in profit these people care for their guests in addition to great campsites. We will definitely come back once my wife is healed and highly recommend this site if your plans for stay in Cimarron area

Campground Response

Quiet and welcoming camp ground. The grounds were clean and well maintained. The bath house was also clean and well maintained. There’s two showers in the men’s room and they were both clean and in order. I’ve stayed at ponil many times and it never disappoints
