You’re on Hatteras Island. Things feel a little slower here (in a good way), and some conveniences are spread out. Plan ahead and you’ll have the best trip.

Beach & Ocean Safety

  • Ocean conditions can change fast. Watch surf and rip current warnings and swim near others when possible.
  • Wind is common — it’s part of the OBX charm — so bring stakes/weights for outdoor items and secure your setup.

Getting Around

  • NC Highway 12 is the main route through the island. Expect slower traffic in peak season.
  • Many guests love bringing or renting bikes for town exploring.

Groceries, Ice & Essentials

  • Stock up early if you’re arriving late. Hours for grocery stores can vary by season.
  • If you’re planning to cook/grill a lot, grab basics like charcoal/propane, sunscreen, bug spray, and extra water when you do your first grocery run.

Dining & Local Flavor

  • Hatteras Island is known for fresh seafood, casual local spots, and sunset dinners.
  • Wait times can be longer in summer. Consider going early or grabbing takeout for a beach picnic.

Fishing, Boating & Water Activities

  • The area is great for surf fishing, sound fishing, and charters.
  • Bring your gear or check out local bait & tackle shops. Staff are usually happy to point you in the right direction.

Ferry Day Tips (If You’re Exploring Ocracoke)

  • The Hatteras–Ocracoke ferry is a can’t-miss day trip. In peak season, lines can build.
  • Plan for an early start and pack snacks/water.

National Park + Outdoor Fun

  • You’re surrounded by the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, with incredible beaches, dunes, and wildlife.
  • Sunrises are unreal  and the night skies can be surprisingly bright with stars.

What to Pack

  • Layers (wind + evenings can feel cooler than you expect)
  • Bug spray for sunset hours
  • Sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water
  • A flashlight/headlamp (super handy after dark)

Good to Know

  • Cell service can vary by carrier in spots on the island.
  • During storms or high tides, travel conditions on Hatteras Island can change — check local updates if weather is moving in.
